A Sober, Alcohol-Free Bar Is Opening Outside Chicago - Booze - Eater National:

The bar will have pretty much everything a typical bar might — couches, pool tables, video games, and space for live music — except for alcohol. The strongest drinks served will be energy drinks. Chris Reed, the president of New Directions, told the Daily Herald that The Other Side will address the sometimes lacking social spaces for the young, sober community. “You can only go to the movie theater and bowling alley so many times,” he explains

This is a great idea.

“I thought [the Dutch raised lanes] were wonderful,” he said. “They make a lot of sense. The interesting thing is, I think when we were in Utrecht, when I showed [local transportation planners] pictures of what we’re doing here, they broke out laughing, not like they were making fun of us but almost in an affectionate way. And I said, ‘What’s so funny?’ And they said, ‘It’s just interesting to look at these pictures of your bike lanes because this is exactly what we were doing forty years ago.’”

Exactly. Chicago and more importantly all of the US needs to learn from these European biking meccas. They’ve been doing it much longer than we… instead of doing it the cheap, bastardized way, lets add some quality to our lived environment.

Courtesy of the always amazing Big Map Blog (you really should follow them on Tumblr and Twitter), here’s an incredible birds-eye view of Chicago and its elevated railways from 1908. More than anything, I love the minute attention to detail on this - smoke curls from factory chimneys, almost every tree in the city’s parks seems to be present. Of particular note is the spur line out to Union Stock Yards, the self-proclaimed “butchery capital of the world”. So many worked at the yards that this line was an absolute necessity to move them in and out.

Our rating: Incredible attention to detail combined with a breathtaking viewpoint make this compelling. 5 stars!
